A spiral wound gasket is one of the most widely used sealing solutions in industrial applications involving high pressure, high temperature, and aggressive media. These gaskets are specifically designed to deliver optimal performance in challenging conditions where other gasket types may fail.
Construction and Function
A spiral wound gasket consists of a soft core, typically a metal strip such as stainless steel, wound in a spiral together with alternating layers of metal windings and a soft sealing material, often graphite or PTFE. The metal windings provide resilience and mechanical strength, while the sealing layer fills microscopic surface irregularities between flange faces.
When flange bolts are tightened, the spiral wound gasket compresses, allowing the sealing material to fill surface imperfections, while the metal spiral maintains pressure and holds the gasket in place. This design makes it highly suitable for applications with fluctuating pressures and temperatures.

Spiral wound gaskets are extensively used in petrochemical plants, refineries, power generation, and other heavy industries where reliable sealing under extreme conditions is critical. They are commonly found in flange connections of pipelines, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and valves.

Metallieke flensafdichtingen zijn vervaardigd uit een of een combinatie van metalen in een gewenste vorm en grootte. Vaak gebruikte metallieke flensafdichtingen zijn ring-type-joint (RTJ) pakkingen. Ring-Type-Joint pakkingen zijn ontworpen om af te dichten middels ” eerste lijn contact” of wig werking tussen de flens en de pakking. Er zijn vier basis varianten, welke afhankelijk van de gekozen flenzen en bouten toegepast worden. Een belangrijke leverancier voor metallieke pakkingen is Flexitallic.
Deze flensafdichtingen hebben een hoge productie nauwkeurigheid, zijn leverbaar in diverse materiaalsoorten. Seaco group houdt RTJ’s de volgende materialen op voorraad:
In zijn algemeenheid kan gesteld worden dat deze afdichtingen temperaturen verdragen van
-250 oC tot 950 oC en drukken van 50 tot 1500 bar. De afdichtingen zijn zowel in ASME als DIN maatvoeringen leverbaar. Alle afdichtingen hebben een hoge gasdichtheid en zijn, mits goed gemonteerd, een probleemloze, veilige en betrouwbare afdichting.
Semi metallieke flensafdichtingen zijn combinaties van metallieke en niet metallieke materialen. Het metalliek is bedoeld om kracht en veerkracht te bieden, terwijl het niet metallieke deel vervormbaarheid en afdichtende eigenschappen biedt. Vaak gebruikte semi metallieke flensafdichtingen zijn spiraal-gewonden, kamprofiel afdichtingen en grafiet spijkerplaat afdichtingen.
Het metallieke deel wordt doorgaans geleverd in AISI 316L, maar kan ook in veel andere materialen geleverd worden als; AISI 321, AISI 304, AISI 347, Aluminium, koper, nikkel, monel, Inconel, incoloy, hastalloy en titanium. Het zachte deel van de flensafdichting kan geleverd worden in de volgende materialen; grafiet, PTFE, aramide vezelplaat, Thermiculite en zilver.
Metallieke en semi metallieke pakkingen zijn breed inzetbaar in een tal van toepassingen in de olie en gas markt, de energiebranche, de water- en foodsector, scheepbouw en subsea toepassingen en de chemische en process industrie. Met name de afdichtingen met firesafe goedkeuring conform API 6FB zijn een veel toegepaste flensafdichting in de chemische, gas en olie industrie.
De flensafdichtingen zijn zowel in ASME als DIN maatvoeringen leverbaar en hebben een lange levensduur wat onderhoud tot een minimum beperkt.
